South lakes artist celebrating nature

Helebore & Homing Pigeon

Helebore & Homing Pigeon

“Fiona’s paintings evoke a sense of stillness and movement in equal measure. It is as if you are looking out from that very point of stillness. The movement comes in with grasses and perhaps a bird swooping across the sky, but painted with such skill one is transported to that place. And that is what we love about them, we are transported.”

My inspiration…

I have lived in the South Lakes, Cumbria for over twenty years. Just a ten minute walk from my home and I can be on Sizergh Fell or down on the mosses, where daily walks with my lurcher Pepper i see the seasonal changes in the landscape and its wildlife.

I enjoy sketching out doors, capturing ‘the moment’ and portraying the spirit and atmosphere of a place. My work can be about the wider landscapes I love or close up, observing the birds, plants and insects that live in these varied habitats; wetland mosses, gardens, rivers, estuary or seascapes.

I want my work to be both uplifting and reflective, with a quiet acknowledgement of our shared earth and how it enriches all our lives.

Favourite locations include: Leighton Moss and Silverdale, Park End Moss Brigsteer, Morecambe Bay and Kent Estuary, Foulshaw Moss and the Lyth valley.
For most of my adult life I have also had a strong affinity with Scotland, resulting in many painting trips there and to Yorkshire too. Over the years I have had several memorable painting trips “further afield” including Norway, Italy and more recently Croatia.

I am a member of the Society Of Wildlife Art, The Lake Artists Society and The Witherslack Group of Artists and makers.

New for 2026

Over the winter period I’ve been enjoying studio time painting seed heads from life, both found and given, wild and cultivated.

As things dry and decay they bring a different beauty and fragility and the forms become sculptural, and the colours though more subdued have a richness.
